To assess prevalence of interpersonal violence among a mixed gender sample of immigrants in Portugal, describing the type of violence and associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2008 and May 2009, evaluating a sample of 702 immigrants residing in the Lisbon region. Information was obtained by trained interviewers using a structured questionnaire. Overall, 15.1 % (15.5 % females and 14.7 % males; p = 0.844) of the immigrants reported to be victims of at least one episode of violence during the last year, regardless of which type of violence was involved.

Health workers’ attitudes toward immigrant patients: a cross-sectional survey in primary health care services.

  • Autores: Cargaleiro H, Dias S, Gama A, Martins MO
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: Human Resources for Health
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Health+workers%27+attitudes+toward+immigrant+patients%3A+a+cross-sectional+survey+in+primary+health+care+services

BACKGROUND:
Health workers’ attitudes toward immigrant patients influence behaviour, medical decisions, quality of care and health outcomes. Despite the increasing number of immigrant patients in health services and the potential influence of health workers’ attitudes, there is little research in this area. This study aimed to examine attitudes of different health workers’ groups toward immigrant patients and to identify the associated factors.

  • Autores: Almeida ML, Ayres-de-Campos D, Caldas J, Dias S, Salcedo-Barrientos D
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Maternal and Child Health Journal
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23334357

Pregnancy is a period of increased vulnerability for migrant women, and access to healthcare, use and quality of care provided during this period are important aspects to characterize the support provided to this population. A systematic review of the scientific literature contained in the MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases was carried out, searching for population based studies published between 1990 and 2012 and reporting on maternal healthcare in immigrant populations.
