The IHMT is the only Portuguese institution dedicated to the study and practice of Tropical Medicine. For more than a century of history, this is been also carried out at a teaching level. It is not then surprising that the IHMT PhD Program (3rd Cycle) in Tropical Medicine is unique in the country. In the rest of the European Space, doctoral degrees in tropical medicine are only organized in the London, Liverpool and Antwerp Institutes, by association with neighboring universities, which officially confer the degree.
This PhD course is intended for individuals with a degree in Medicine, if pre-Bologna, with a Master’s degree in Medicine if they hold an integrated master’s degree or any of the referred ones if degree held abroad.
PhD students in Tropical Medicine will be asked to have good human relationships and empathy skills, to challenge themselves and others, as well as scientific reasoning, critical thinking, interest and open mind towards the world and an innovative spirit.
On the other hand, in the IHMT, the students will find favorable conditions to multiculturalism and to a man centered learning, taking into account his surrounding conditions, essentially with regard to his health. At IHMT, both staff and teaching staff have a long tradition of receiving and accommodating students, helping them to overcome the problems that often arise in their daily lives.
The faculty of the PhD in Tropical Medicine has a vast experience of research, clinical and teaching in this area, transmitted to the students in the form of interactive classes, workshops, seminars and others, which are only possible taking into account the structure of this PhD, which can be adapted to the specific needs of each student. This flexibility is based on the fact that there is no fixed and mandatory curricular part, but rather the offer of personalised thematic modules.

Message from the Coordinator
The Doctoral Program in Tropical Medicine presents a totally innovative format, in order to meet the new national and international dynamics and the culture and practice of modern medical research. At the same time, the teaching will take into account the specific conditions and the specific themes of low and middle-income countries, in which some PhDs will carry out their research. For my part, and as coordinator of this PhD, I am committed to create all the necessary conditions for the students not only succeed academically but also feel gratified, humanly, ethically and culturally. I am sure that all the staff involved in this PhD will accompany me in this challenge, so that all students can later go out and make a difference wherever their personal or professional life takes place.
