Tropical Medicine

IntroductionCurriculaTeaching bodyScheduleApplication and TuitionRegistration and Accreditation

The IHMT is the only Portuguese institution dedicated to the study and practice of Tropical Medicine. For more than a century of history, this is been also carried out at a teaching level. It is not then surprising that the IHMT PhD Program (3rd Cycle) in Tropical Medicine is unique in the country. In the rest of the European Space, doctoral degrees in tropical medicine are only organized in the London, Liverpool and Antwerp Institutes, by association with neighboring universities, which officially confer the degree.

This PhD course is intended for individuals with a degree in Medicine, if pre-Bologna, with a Master’s degree in Medicine if they hold an integrated master’s degree or any of the referred ones if degree held abroad.

PhD students in Tropical Medicine will be asked to have good human relationships and empathy skills, to challenge themselves and others, as well as scientific reasoning, critical thinking, interest and open mind towards the world and an innovative spirit.

On the other hand, in the IHMT, the students will find favorable conditions to multiculturalism and to a man centered learning, taking into account his surrounding conditions, essentially with regard to his health. At IHMT, both staff and teaching staff have a long tradition of receiving and accommodating students, helping them to overcome the problems that often arise in their daily lives.

The faculty of the PhD in Tropical Medicine has a vast experience of research, clinical and teaching in this area, transmitted to the students in the form of interactive classes, workshops, seminars and others, which are only possible taking into account the structure of this PhD, which can be adapted to the specific needs of each student. This flexibility is based on the fact that there is no fixed and mandatory curricular part, but rather the offer of personalised thematic modules.

Objectives

The PhD Program in Tropical Medicine of the IHMT aims to provide students with:

  • in-depth knowledge and broad understanding of the main global health problems in limited resource regions and their possible solutions, from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • ability to comprehensively understand the causal link, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnosis, complications, epidemiology, management and control of major tropical diseases, with in depth integration of these scientific and technical knowledge concepts;
  • ability to understand health and disease in the multidimensional, physical, psychological and social perspective;
  •  an understanding of the current nature of medicine, which requires both health and disease management and, consequently, an understanding of the importance of disease prevention and health promotion;
  • knowledge and skills in research methods applied to the analysis of global health problems, including qualitative and quantitative research methods;
  • ability to plan, perform, interpret and evaluate experimental studies in tropical medicine;
  • ability to understand and apply epidemiological principles including the selection of appropriate study designs and the application and interpretation of advanced statistical tests;
  • ability to understand the relationship between the basic sciences, clinical practice and public health, in the current advanced perspective of science-based medicine and translational medicine, particularly in tropical medicine;
  •  capacity for critical evaluation of evidence on global health and biomedical research in tropical medicine, with emphasis on published literature;
  • critical capacity of the socio-ecological bases of health promotion, as well as experience on ethical based decisions;
  • aptitude for the teaching, evaluation and supervision of undergraduate, masters and doctoral students, in this case after postdoctoral experience;
  • ability to communicate verbal concepts and scientific results;
  • ability to communicate in writing, as required in various professional duties, including preparation of manuscripts for scientific publication, revision or dissemination, preparation of projects for research funding and reports, development of introductory and advanced courses in disciplines of their specialty;
  • development of scientific maturity to evaluate the work of peers in related areas;
  • general and transversal skills, including: the ability to learn throughout life; recognition of the importance of permanent self-assessment, development of attitudes towards citizenship practice, mastery of information technologies and of foreign languages, recognition of the importance of teamwork for the appropriate treatment of the patient and other case studies.

Student profile/Admission conditions

  • Master’s degree in Medicine (integrated master’s degree)
  • Graduates in Medicine (pre-Bologna)
  • Graduates or an integrated Masters in Medicine, when abroad

In addition to the above mentioned conditions, candidates must demonstrate ability to understand, read and express basic English and in the case of foreigners, a reasonable domain of the Portuguese language, some insufficiency being accepted, as long as in this case the student is able to read English articles and write his thesis in English.

Message from the Coordinator

The Doctoral Program in Tropical Medicine presents a totally innovative format, in order to meet the new national and international dynamics and the culture and practice of modern medical research. At the same time, the teaching will take into account the specific conditions and the specific themes of low and middle-income countries, in which some PhDs will carry out their research. For my part, and as coordinator of this PhD, I am committed to create all the necessary conditions for the students not only succeed academically but also feel gratified, humanly, ethically and culturally. I am sure that all the staff involved in this PhD will accompany me in this challenge, so that all students can later go out and make a difference wherever their personal or professional life takes place.
