Fátima Nogueira is a Researcher at Medical Parasitology UNIT, Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IHMT/UNL). She has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specialty of Medical Parasitology (IHMT/UNL, 2007).
Currently, she teaches in the areas of Medical Parasitology and coordinates the Malaria curricular unit (UC) from the MSc in Medical Biosciences, collaborates regularly with several other UC from the MSc in Medical Parasitology, MSc in Tropical Health, PhD in Biomedical Sciences, PhD in Tropical Medicine of the IHMT/UNL and in the joint IHM+FCM/UNL PhD program in Infectious Disease and Human Genetics.
Her main research interests are the antimalarial drug resistance mechanisms and targets; a) development of molecular tools for monitoring drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax; b) screening (in vivo and in vitro) of new synthetic and natural for anti-malarial activity. She participated in 13 national and international research projects.
She supervises 2 PhD students and 6 MSc students (4 concluded) and co-supervises 1 PhD and 6 MSCs (all concluded). F Nogueira is author/co-author of 39 peer-reviewed publications.
My group general research interest is antimalarial drug resistance: mechanisms and targets. To pursue this we have been:
a) searching for antimalarial drug resistance determinants exploring the redox response system of the malaria parasite, hemozoin crystal ultrastructure (in collaboration with NanoLab at IST, Lisbon), hemozoin electromagnétic properties (in collaboration with Unidade de Sistemas Biomédicos e Biossinais, IST);
b) developing of molecular tools for monitoring and monitoring P. falciparum and P. vivax antimalarial drug resistance spread in the field using molecular markers in collaboration with Universities and Health Centres in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique;
c) Search for new lead for compounds anti-malarials either synthetic or bacteria and plant-derived.
