Maria Odete Afonso is Assistant Professor in Medical Entomology – Unit of Medical Parasitology – at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IHMT/UNL).
Afonso MO has a Medical degree from the Classic University of Lisbon, postgraduate studies in Public Health and Tropical Medicine (IHMT/UNL), a Teaching Aptitude and Scientific Capacity exam – Master equivalent degree (IHMT/UNL), and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specialization in Parasitology – Entomology (IHMT/UNL).
She is researcher and teacher in Medical Entomology, and supervisor and co-supervisor of training in MSc and PhD at IHMT/UNL. Has been invited as teacher, within her scientific domain, in Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade de Évora, and Universidade do Algarve.
Member of the National Observatory of Leishmaniasis (ONLeish) and the FCT research units, she is member and consultant at national and international research projects, and has supervised several students of postgraduate degrees (Masters and Post Doctorate).
Maria Odete Afonso is author/co-author of over 30 peer reviewed publications and 3 book chapters.
Her main areas of interest are Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera, Psychodidae) as Leishmania vectors, with regard to morphology, eco-epidemiological, population and vectorial aspects, as well as the influence of climatic and environmental changes in the said biological system; Tsetse flies (Diptera, Glossinidae), as vectors of African trypanosomes: identification of Glossina from Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Angola, morphological, populational, epidemiological and vectorial aspects, and vector-parasite relationships.
