The special GHTM Session on ‘Epidemiology and Disease Control in Africa: perspectives on research and implementation’ provides an overview of methods and programmes regarding two pathologies, malaria and Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness, which have been central to disease control efforts in Africa. The speakers, who are specialists in their respective fields, will trace the distinct trajectories of these programmes and the methods and approaches which were implemented by and under the auspices of the World Health Organization to combat them. They will address strategies, successes and faIlures in terms of programme design and implementation, and discuss the latest collaborative strategies and interventions as well as the perspectives for achieving effective vector and disease control – and potential elimination – in Africa.
