Margarida Saraiva | IBMC – i3S
She obtained her degree in Biochemistry in 1997, by Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Portugal. In 2003, After 4 years (1999-2002) of research on Poxvirus Immune Evasion, in Antonio Alcami’s lab, Margarida concluded her PhD in Virology-Pathology awarded by the University of Cambridge, UK. Margarida then moved to Anne O’Garra’s lab, at the MRC-National Institute for Medical Research (London), where she investigated the molecular mechanisms that regulate the expression of interleukin (IL)-10 by immune cells. In 2007, Margarida Saraiva returned to Portugal and joined the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) at Universidade do Minho, as a Ciência 2007 fellow. Since 2013, Margarida Saraiva is a FCT Associate Investigator. From June 2015, she leads the Immune Regulation group at IBMC, aiming at investigating the mechanisms underlying the regulation of host-pathogen interactions, using tuberculosis as a model. The Immune Regulation team also investigates the impact of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-10, in the organism homeostasis. Margarida currently serves as vice-president for the Portuguese Society for Immunology, is a Management Committee member for the COST Action MyeUniter and is a member of the editorial Board of Immunity, Inflammation and Disease.
