R&D in medicine: start ups, bioinformatics, genomics and beyond
José B. Pereira Leal – Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência; Ophiomics – Precision Medicine; Healthcare City
José Pereira Leal coordinates the Computational Genomics Laboratory at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência since 2006. He is since 2015 serving as the Executive Director of Ophiomics- Precision Medicine, a company he co-founded. He is also serving as the Scientific director of HealthCare city, an accelerator/incubator promoted by Nova Medical School, Janssen, Medis and Lusíadas Saúde.
He trained as a Biochemist at the University of Lisbon, and obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto, having conducted his research under the supervision of Miguel C. Seabra at the Southwestern Medical Centre at Dallas, USA, and at Imperial college School of Medicine in the UK. As a postdoc he stayed at the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute, and at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, both in the UK, working with Christos Ouzounis and Sarah Teichmann, respectively. He has participated in the Advanced Management Program for Entrepreneurs by Católica University.
