Cooperation and Development Aid is one of the areas of strategic activity of IHMT. The Institute prioritises the development of actions focused in the Member States of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), with full respect for their unique identities and different needs, supporting them in the implementation of its health priorities.
Within this framework, the IHMT develops Bilateral Agreements with the WHO Regional Office for Africa, as well as with various entities within the armed forces, ministries of health, institutes and schools of African Portuguese-speaking countries.
In addition, and under a protocol with the Ministry of Health, the Institute co-coordinates, in partnership with the General Directorate of Health, aid to health development in partner countries.
Within the CPLP, IHMT is the Advisory Board of the CPLP Executive Secretariat, along with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil. Under this function, IHMT provides technical support for the implementation of the following projects::
- Strategic Plan for Cooperation in Health
- Network of Public Health Institutes
- Network of Medical Schools
- Network of Health Inspection and Sector Regulation
- Specialized Medical Training Center
- Research networks on malaria, tuberculosis and HIV
IHMT also coordinates two CPLP’s thematic committees:
- Cultural Affairs
- Food and Nutrition Security
And it is member of the following thematic committees: Health; Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology; and Environment.
The Institute also provides packages of training programs on request and tailored to the needs of countries that may request them.
To support the implementation of this mission, the IHMT holds a Cooperation and International Affairs Office.
