Museum

Concept

Since the beginning of the Tropical Medicine School a reference is made to the existence of a museum. In that time, the museum was fundamentally the repository of materials used in classes for teaching purposes, more than the gathering of “pieces with history”.

Over the years, methodologies and techniques have changed. Each IHMT’s teaching and research unit began to gather and store their teaching materials, together with specific equipment. Some of these objects have become obsolete but often the memory they carried with them prevented its destruction and alienation.

The IHMT Museum was reactivated, now following historical heritage safeguard objectives, because the one who does not know himself and his past is unable to effectively plan the future.

Currently, IHMT Museum’s main mission is to ensure and enhance the protection of our medical, scientific and artistic heritage through documentation activities, inventory, conservation, exhibition, dissemination, training and research, thus contributing to the ennoblement of history and culture of Portuguese, and international, Tropical Medicine.

The Museum is coordinated by a deputy director, appointed by the Director. Its management is supported by a honorary presidency and institutional curators, consisting of a external Board of Trustees, who are representatives of the collaborating institutions.

Its legal competencies ( Desp.  8457/2016, 29th june) are:

  • To collect and catalog the training and research assets of IHMT, which hold historical interest;
  • To promote the dissemination of this historic assets, including the organization of exhibitions;
  • To develop and disseminate the virtual museum
