Dynamics of cytokines and immunoglobulins serum profiles in primary and secondary Cryptosporidium parvum infection: Usefulness of Luminex® xMAP technology

  • Autores: Borrego M, Codices V, de Sousa B, Lopes T, Martins C, Matos O, Novo C
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Experimental Parasitology
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23178641

Infection by Cryptosporidium parvum triggers a complex array of innate and adaptive cell mediated immune response, playing an important role in controlling the infection. To date, there are no studies applying the Luminex® xMAP technology to determine profiles of cytokines and immunoglobulins in the context of an infection by C. parvum. In this study, we analyzed these immune mediators in the serum of immunocompetent mice inoculated with C. parvum oocysts, using Luminex, to understand how the immune system responds to an infection by this parasite.

Therapeutic Potential of Caspofungin Combined with Trimethoprim-Sul- famethoxazole for Pneumocystis Pneumonia: A Pilot Study in Mice

  • Autores: Antunes F, Cardoso F, Cushion MT, de Sousa B, Esteves F, Lobo ML, Matos O
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: PLoS One
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23940606

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in immunocompromised patients. There are limited alternative therapeutic choices to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) which is the standard first line therapy/prophylaxis for PcP.

Specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are recognized as important DNA sequence variations influencing the pathogenesis of Pneumocystis jirovecii and the clinical outcome of Pneumocystis pneumonia, which is a major worldwide cause of illness among immunocompromised patients

Population structure of Pneumocystis jirovecii isolated from immunodeficiency virus-positive patients

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) is an important opportunistic infection among immunocompromised patients. Genetic characterization of P. jirovecii isolated from HIV-positive patients, based on identification of multiple nucleotide sequences at eight distinct loci, was achieved by using PCR with DNA sequencing and RFLP.

Molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium isolates from pre-weaned calves in Romania: is there an actual risk of zoonotic infections?

  • Autores: Darabus G, Genchi C, Imre K, Lobo LM, Matos O, Popescu C
  • Ano de Publicação: 2011
  • Journal: Veterinary Parasitology

Diarrheic fecal samples from 258 pre-weaned calves (1-30 day-old) from 9 dairy farms located in Banat region, Romania, were microscopically examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Overall, 65 (25%) samples were found positive.

The 12th International Workshops on Opportunistic Protists (IWOP-12)

  • Autores: Calderon EJ, Cushion MT, Didier E, Kaneshiro ES, Marciano-Cabral F, Matos O, Sinai AP, Weiss LM, Xiao L
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology

The 12th International Workshops on Opportunistic Protists (IWOP-12) was held in August 2012 in Tarrytown, New York. The objectives of the IWOP meetings are to: (1) serve as a forum for exchange of new information among active researchers concerning the basic biology, molecular genetics, immunology, biochemistry, pathogenesis, drug development, therapy, and epidemiology of these immunodeficiency-associated pathogenic eukaryotic microorganisms that are seen in patients with AIDS and (2) foster the entry of new and young investigators into these underserved research areas.

  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Development+of+a+multilocus+sequence+typing+tool+for+high-resolution+genotyping+of+Enterocytozoon+bieneusi.

Thus far, genotyping of Enterocytozoon bieneusi has been based solely on DNA sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the rRNA gene. Both host-adapted and zoonotic (human-pathogenic) genotypes of E. bieneusi have been identified.

Larvicidal Activity Against Aedes aegypti of Foeniculum vulgare Essential Oils from Portugal and Cape Verde

Dengue is a potentially fatal mosquito-borne infection with 50 million cases per year and 2.5 billion people vulnerable to the disease. This major public health problem has recurrent epidemics in Latin America and occurred recently in Cape Verde and Madeira Island. The lack of anti-viral treatment or vaccine makes the control of mosquito vectors a high option to prevent virus transmission.
