To investigate the transmission of species of Cryptosporidium Tyzzer, 1907 in Timis County, Romania, 48 isolates of Cryptosporidium coccidia from 11 children, 29 calves and eight pigs were characterised by molecular analysis of two loci (SSU rRNA and 60-kDa glycoprotein gene).

Larvicidal Activity Against Aedes aegypti of Foeniculum vulgare Essential Oils from Portugal and Cape Verde

Dengue is a potentially fatal mosquito-borne infection with 50 million cases per year and 2.5 billion people vulnerable to the disease. This major public health problem has recurrent epidemics in Latin America and occurred recently in Cape Verde and Madeira Island. The lack of anti-viral treatment or vaccine makes the control of mosquito vectors a high option to prevent virus transmission.

Monoclonal antibody technology applied to the detection of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in human and cattle fecal samples

With the discovery that the coccidian parasiteCryptosporidium sp. can cause severe symptoms in humans, many diagnostic techniques were quickly implemented such as microscopic visualization, immunofluorescence and PCR. Currently, there is no effective drug treatment and none of the current diagnostic methods is 100% accurate. In this study, a BALB/C mouse was subcutaneously immunized with Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts extract.

Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and other intestinal parasites in young children in Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe

  • Autores: Antunes F, Augusto J, Ceita J, Codices V, Lobo ML, Matos O, Xiao L
  • Ano de Publicação: 2014
  • Journal: PLoS One

Rare systemic studies concerning prevalence of intestinal parasites in children have been conducted in the second smallest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. Fecal specimens from 348 children (214 in-hospital attending the Aires de Menezes Hospital and 134 from Agostinho Neto village) in São Tome Island were studied by parasitological and molecular methods.

Pneumocystis and Pneumocystosis: first meeting of experts from Latin-American and Portuguese-speaking countries – a mini-review

The epidemiological studies presented in this meeting begin to change the misconception that since the AIDS epidemic, Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) has become an infrequent disease, showing that today PcP remains a major opportunistic infection in HIV-infected patients in both developed and developing countries and an emerging problem in immunocompromised patients without HIV infection worldwide.

(1-3)-Beta-D-glucan in association with lactate dehydrogenase as biomarkers of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) in HIV-infected patients

  • Autores: Antunes F, Badura R, de Sousa B, Esteves F, Fernandes C, Gaspar JF, Lee CH, Matos O, Seringa M
  • Ano de Publicação: 2014
  • Journal: European Journal of Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) is a major HIV-related illness caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii. Definitive diagnosis of PcP requires microscopic detection of P. jirovecii in pulmonary specimens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of two serum markers in the diagnosis of PcP. Serum levels of (1-3)-beta-d-glucan (BG) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were investigated in 100 HIV-positive adult patients and 50 healthy blood donors.

Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in cats from Lisbon and in pigs from centre and south of Portugal

  • Autores: Aguiar D, Antunes F, Costa ML, de Sousa B, Esteves F, Matos O, Rosado J
  • Ano de Publicação: 2014
  • Journal: Veterinary Parasitology

Toxoplasmosis is an important zoonosis worldwide. Here we determined the presence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sera and T. gondii DNA in faeces of 215 domestic cats from veterinary clinics in the Lisbon area; 44 (20.5%) had anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies by the modified agglutination test (cut-off 1:40) and DNA was detected in 16 (35.6%) of 45 cat faeces tested.
