BACKGROUND:
Special services within public hospitals are becoming increasingly common in low and middle income countries with the stated objective of providing higher comfort services to affluent customers and generating resources for under funded hospitals.

Identification of papain-like cysteine proteases from the bovine piroplasm Babesia bigemina and evolutionary relationship of piroplasms C1 family of cysteine proteases.

  • Autores: Do Rosário VE, Domingos A, Martins TM
  • Ano de Publicação: 2011
  • Journal: Experimental Parasitology
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Identification+of+papain-like+cysteine+proteases+from+the+bovine+piroplasm+Babesia+bigemina+and+evolutionary+relationship+of+piroplasms+C1+family+of+cysteine+proteases.

Papain-like cysteine proteases have been shown to have essential roles in parasitic protozoa and are under study as promising drug targets. Five genes were identified by sequence similarity search to be homologous to the cysteine protease family in the ongoing Babesia bigemina genome sequencing project database and were compared with the annotated genes from the complete bovine piroplasm genomes of Babesia bovis, Theileria annulata, and Theileria parva.

Expression and characterization of the Babesia bigemina cysteine protease BbiCPL1.

  • Autores: Do Rosário VE, Domingos A, Martins TM
  • Ano de Publicação: 2011
  • Journal: Acta Tropica
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Expression+and+characterization+of+the+Babesia+bigemina+cysteine+protease+babesipain-1.

BbiCPL1 was the first papain-like cysteine protease from a piroplasm to be identified with proteolytic activity. Here we report the improved production of the active recombinant enzyme, and the biochemical characterization of this potential drug target.

The interplay between tubulins and P450 cytochromes during Plasmodium berghei invasion of Anopheles gambiae midgut.

  • Autores: Felix RC, Silveira H
  • Ano de Publicação: 2011
  • Journal: PLoS One
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=The+interplay+between+tubulins+and+P450+cytochromes+during+Plasmodium+berghei+invasion+of+Anopheles+gambiae+midgut.

BACKGROUND:
Plasmodium infection increases the oxidative stress inside the mosquito, leading to a significant alteration on transcription of Anopheles gambiae detoxification genes. Among these detoxification genes several P450 cytochromes and tubulins were differently expressed, suggesting their involvement in the mosquito’s response to parasite invasion.

Use of the old antipsychotic phenothiazine thioridazine (THZ) for therapy of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB) infection is now being seriously considered.

The emergence of resistance in tuberculosis has become a serious problem for the control of this disease. For that reason, new therapeutic strategies that can be implemented in the clinical setting are urgently needed.
