Inhibitors of mycobacterial efflux pumps as potential boosters for anti-tubercular drugs.

  • Autores: Ainsa J, Amaral L, Couto I, Machado D, Martins M, Rodrigues L, Viveiros M
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: Expert Review of Anti-infective Therapy
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Inhibitors+of+mycobacterial+efflux+pumps+as+potential+boosters+for+anti-tubercular+drugs

Tuberculosis is one of the major causes of infection across the world. The emergence of multi-, extensively- and totally drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis contributes to the lack of therapeutic options available.

Enhanced heterosexual transmission hypothesis for the origin of pandemic HIV-1.

HIV-1 M originated from SIVcpz endemic in chimpanzees from southeast Cameroon or neighboring areas, and it started to spread in the early 20th century. Here we examine the factors that may have contributed to simian-to-human transmission, local transmission between humans, and export to a city.

Why and how thioridazine in combination with antibiotics to which the infective strain is resistant will cure totally drug-resistant tuberculosis.

  • Autores: Amaral L, Molnar J

Over a period of 14 years, the authors have studied thioridazine, an old neuroleptic, that has been shown to have in vitro activity against intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis, regardless of its antibiotic resistance status, thioridazine cures infected mice of antibiotic-susceptible and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) infections and, when used in combination with antibiotics used for therapy of TB, renders the organism significantly more susceptible.

Genetic characterization of an insect-specific flavivirus isolated from Culex theileri mosquitoes collected in southern Portugal.

  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Genetic+characterization+of+an+insect-specific+flavivirus+isolated+from+Culex+theileri+mosquitoes+collected+in+southern+Portugal

We describe the full genetic characterization of an insect-specific flavivirus (ISF) from Culex theileri (Theobald) mosquitoes collected in Portugal. This represents the first isolation and full characterization of an ISF from Portuguese mosquitoes. The virus, designated CTFV, for Culex theileri flavivirus, was isolated in the C6/36 Stegomyia albopicta (=Aedes albopictus) cell line, and failed to replicate in vertebrate (Vero) cells in common with other ISFs.

Following the identification of two autochthonous cases of dengue type 1 on 3 October 2012, an outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in Madeira, Portugal.

Health services and the treatment of immigrants: data on service use, interpreting services and immigrant staff members in services across Europe.

BACKGROUND:
The number of immigrants using health services has increased across Europe. For assessing and improving the quality of care provided for immigrants, information is required on how many immigrants use services, what interpreting services are provided and whether staff members are from immigrant groups.

Evidence of significant synergism between antibiotics and the antipsychotic, antimicrobial drug flupenthixol.

  • Autores: Amaral L, Dasgupta A, Dastidar SG, Jeyaseeli L, Molnar J

Previously, the antipsychotic, non-antibiotic compound flupenthixol dihydrochloride (Fp) was shown to exhibit distinct in vitro antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and to significantly protect Swiss albino mice challenged with a known mouse virulent salmonella.

Simultaneous RNA quantification of human and retroviral genomes reveals intact interferon signaling in HTLV-1-infected CD4+ T cell lines.

BACKGROUND:
IFN-α contributes extensively to host immune response upon viral infection through antiviral, pro-apoptotic, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory activities. Although extensively documented in various types of human cancers and viral infections, controversy exists in the exact mechanism of action of IFN-α in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) retroviral infections.

Population genetic studies of insect vectors can generate knowledge to improve epidemiological studies focused on the decrease of pathogen transmission. In this study, we used nine SNPs across the Aedes aegypti genome to characterize seasonal population variations of this important dengue vector.

The Culex pipiens complex includes two widespread mosquito vector species, Cx. pipiens and Cx. quinquefasciatus. The distribution of these species varies in latitude, with the former being present in temperate regions and the latter in tropical and subtropical regions.
