Trypanosoma cruzi IV causing outbreaks of acute Chagas disease and infections by different haplotypes in the Western Brazilian Amazonia.

BACKGROUND:
Chagas disease is an emergent tropical disease in the Brazilian Amazon Region, with an increasing number of cases in recent decades. In this region, the sylvatic cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission, which constitutes a reservoir of parasites that might be associated with specific molecular, epidemiological and clinical traits, has been little explored.

Does interview setting influence disclosure of violence? A study in elderly

  • Autores: Barros H, Costa D, Dias S, Fraga S
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: Age and Ageing
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Does+interview+setting+influence+disclosure+of+violence%3F+A+study+in+elderly

BACKGROUND:
Violence is a very sensitive research topic and interview’s setting might influence the participation rate and response accuracy. We aimed to evaluate such effect when assessing the prevalence of different types of violence in a sample of urban elderly by comparing those interviewed at home with those assessed at the research office.

Pyruvate kinase deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa: identification of a highly frequent missense mutation (G829A;Glu277Lys) and association with malaria.

  • Autores: Amorim A, Arez AP, Cano J, Chibute S, Do Rosário VE, Fernandes N, Gomes C, Langa J, Machado P, Manco L, Mendes C, Miranda J, Pinto J, Ribeiro L, Salomé G, Sitoe L

BACKGROUND:
Pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, causing hemolytic anemia, has been associated to malaria protection and its prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa is not known so far. This work shows the results of a study undertaken to determine PK deficiency occurrence in some sub-Saharan African countries, as well as finding a prevalent PK variant underlying this deficiency.

Expression and characterization of the Babesia bigemina cysteine protease BbiCPL1

  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Expression+and+characterization+of+the+Babesia+bigemina+cysteine+protease+BbiCPL1.

BbiCPL1 was the first papain-like cysteine protease from a piroplasm to be identified with proteolytic activity. Here we report the improved production of the active recombinant enzyme, and the biochemical characterization of this potential drug target.

Highly dynamic host actin reorganization around developing Plasmodium inside hepatocytes.

  • Autores: Afonso C, Almeida AP, Frischknecht F, Gardner R, Gomes-Santos CS, Henriques R, Itoe MA, Moita LF, Mota MM, Raquel H, Sepúlveda N, Simões PD

Plasmodium sporozoites are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and infect hepatocytes, where a single sporozoite replicates into thousands of merozoites inside a parasitophorous vacuole. The nature of the Plasmodium-host cell interface, as well as the interactions occurring between these two organisms, remains largely unknown.

KDNA genetic signatures obtained by LSSP-PCR analysis of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum isolated from the new and the old world.

BACKGROUND:
Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) caused by species from the Leishmania donovani complex is the most severe form of the disease, lethal if untreated. VL caused by Leishmania infantum is a zoonosis with an increasing number of human cases and millions of dogs infected in the Old and the New World. In this study, L. infantum (syn. L.chagasi) strains were isolated from human and canine VL cases.

Contribution of efflux to the emergence of isoniazid and multidrug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

  • Autores: Amaral L, Baptista P, Couto I, Machado D, Perdigão J, Portugal I, Rodrigues L, Veigas B, Viveiros M
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: PLoS One
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Contribution+of+Efflux+to+the+Emergence+of+Isoniazid+and+Multidrug+Resistance+in+Mycobacterium+tuberculosis

Multidrug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin, the two most effective drugs used in tuberculosis therapy. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which resistance towards isoniazid develops and how overexpression of efflux pumps favors accumulation of mutations in isoniazid targets, thus establishing a MDR phenotype.

A public HTLV-1 molecular epidemiology database for sequence management and data mining.

  • Autores: Alcantara LC, Araujo TH, de Albuquerque-Junior AE, Deforche K, Edwards D, Galvão-Castro B, Libin P, Souza-Brito LI, Vandamme AM
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: PLoS One

BACKGROUND:
It is estimated that 15 to 20 million people are infected with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). At present, there are more than 2,000 unique HTLV-1 isolate sequences published. A central database to aggregate sequence information from a range of epidemiological aspects including HTLV-1 infections, pathogenesis, origins, and evolutionary dynamics would be useful to scientists and physicians worldwide.
