Infection by the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus causes a disease known as cystic echinococcosis or hydatidosis, which is one of the most widespread zoonotic infections of veterinary and medical importance.

Experimental canine leishmaniasis: clinical, parasitological and serological follow-up

  • Autores: Campino L, Cristóvão J, Maia C, Nunes M
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010
  • Journal: Acta Tropica
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Experimental+canine+leishmaniasis%3A+clinical%2C+parasitological+and+serological+follow-up

Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) caused by Leishmania infantum is transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies and affects millions of dogs in Europe, Asia, North Africa and South America. Canis familiaris is the major host for these parasites, and the main reservoir for human visceral infection. The development of effective molecules for therapy and immunoprophylaxis, […]

Therapy Of XDR TB with thioridazine a drug beyond patent protection but eligible for patent “as new use”

  • Autores: Amaral L, Molnar J

Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is resistant to Isoniazid (INH) and Rifampin (Rif) and hence, multi-drug resistant (MDR) has progressed to extensive drug resistant (XDR) status. XDR strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (XDR Mtb) are resistant, in addition to INH and Rif, to any fluoroquinolone, streptomycin and to any of the injectable anti-TB drugs kanamycin, amikacin and capreomycin.

Feline Leishmania infection in a canine leishmaniasis endemic region, Portugal

  • Autores: Campino L, Cristóvão J, Gomes J, Maia C, Martins A, Nunes M, Rebêlo E
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010
  • Journal: Veterinary Parasitology

Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) caused by Leishmania infantum is a serious zoonotic public health and veterinary problem in the Mediterranean basin. Leishmania infection in domestic cats (Felis catus domesticus) has been reported in several countries where this zoonosis is endemic, such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Israel, Palestine and Brazil. The aim of this study […]

Malaria: looking for selection signatures in the human PKLR gene region

  • Autores: Amorim A, Arez AP, Do Rosário VE, Fernandes N, Gusmão L, Machado P, Manco L, Miranda J, Pereira R, Ribeiro L, Rocha AM
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010
  • Journal: British journal of haematology
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Malaria%3A+looking+for+selection+signatures+in+the+human+PKLR+gene+region

The genetic component of susceptibility to malaria is both complex and multigenic and the better-known protective polymorphisms are those involving erythrocyte-specific structural proteins and enzymes. In vivo and in vitro data have suggested that pyruvate kinase deficiency, which causes a nonspherocytic haemolytic anaemia, could be protective against malaria severity in humans, but this hypothesis remains […]

Field, genetic, and modeling approaches show strong positive selection acting upon an insecticide resistance mutation in Anopheles gambiae s.s

  • Autores: Barbosa S, Donnelly MJ, Egyir-Yawson A, Hastings I, Lynd A, Mitchell S, Pinto J, Weetman D

Alleles subject to strong, recent positive selection will be swept toward fixation together with contiguous sections of the genome. Whether the genomic signatures of such selection will be readily detectable in outbred wild populations is unclear. In this study, we employ haplotype diversity analysis to examine evidence for selective sweeps around knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations […]

Analysis of malaria associated genetic traits in Cabo Verde, a melting pot of European and sub Saharan settlers

  • Autores: Alves J, Amorim A, Arez AP, Do Rosário VE, Faustino P, Gonçalves N, Gusmão L, Machado P, Manco L, Ribeiro L, Silva J
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010

  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Analysis+of+malaria+associated+genetic+traits+in+Cabo+Verde%2C+a+melting+pot+of+European+and+sub+Saharan+settlers

Malaria has occurred in the Cabo Verde archipelago with epidemic characteristics since its colonization. Nowadays, it occurs in Santiago Island alone and though prophylaxis is not recommended by the World Health Organization, studies have highlight the prospect of malaria becoming a serious public health problem as a result of the presence of antimalarial drug resistance associated with mutations in the parasite populations and underscore the need for tighter surveillance.

Mosquito fauna on the Cape Verde Islands (West Africa): an update on species distribution and a new finding

  • Autores: Alves J, Arez AP, Gomes B, Pinto J, Rodrigues R, Silva J, Sousa CA

To evaluate the risk of transmission of vector-borne diseases, regular updates of the geographic distribution of insect vectors are required. In the archipelago of Cape Verde, nine mosquito species have been reported.

Mosquito surveys and West Nile virus screening in two different areas of southern Portugal, 2004-2007

Longitudinal mosquito surveys were carried out in southern Portugal from 2004 to 2007, in a wetland area (Comporta, District of Setúbal) and around the perimeter of a dam irrigation plant that created the largest artificial lake in Europe, 250 km(2) (Alqueva, Districts of Evora and Beja).

Population structure of Pneumocystis jirovecii isolated from immunodeficiency virus-positive patients

  • Autores: Antunes F, Esteves F, Gaspar J, Mansinho K, Matos O, Moser I, Tavares A

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) is an important opportunistic infection among immunocompromised patients. Genetic characterization of P. jirovecii isolated from HIV-positive patients, based on identification of multiple nucleotide sequences at eight distinct loci, was achieved by using PCR with DNA sequencing and RFLP.
