Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of liver disease throughout the world. The NS5A and E2 proteins of HCV genotype 1 were reported to inhibit the double-stranded (ds) RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR), which is involved in the cellular antiviral response induced by interferon (IFN). The response to IFN therapy is quite different between […]

Probing the aurone scaffold against Plasmodium falciparum: design, synthesis and antimalarial activity

  • Autores: Carrasco MP, dos Santos DJ, Gois A, Gonçalves L, Guedes RC, Gut J, Hänscheid T, Machado M, Moreira R, Newton AS, Nogueira F, Rosenthal PJ
  • Ano de Publicação: 2014
  • Journal: European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24813880

A library comprising 44 diversely substituted aurones derivatives was synthesized by straightforward aldol condensation reactions of benzofuranones and the appropriately substituted benzaldehydes. Microwave enhanced synthesis using palladium catalyzed protocols was introduced as a powerful strategy for extending the chemical space around the aurone scaffold.

Sample size for estimating a binomial proportion: comparison of different methods.

  • Autores: Gonçalves L, Pascoal C., Pires A., Rosario de Oliveira M.
  • Ano de Publicação: 2012
  • Journal: Journal of Applied Statistics
  • Link: https://apps.webofknowledge.com/full_record.do?product=UA&search_mode=GeneralSearch&qid=7&SID=T1zdDDEYC1eBxhDSCne&page=1&doc=2

The poor performance of the Wald method for constructing confidence intervals (CIs) for a binomial proportion has been demonstrated in a vast literature. The related problem of sample size determination needs to be updated and comparative studies are essential to understanding the performance of alternative methods.

Urban Planning and Health Inequities: Looking in a Small-Scale in a City of Cape Verde

  • Autores: Alves D, Amado M, Cabral J, Correia A, Craveiro I, Delgado AP, Gonçalves L, Lapão LV, Santos Z, Simões R
  • Ano de Publicação: 2015

The lack of high-quality data to support evidence-based policies continues to be a concern in African cities, which present marked social, economic and cultural disparities that may differently impact the health of the groups living in different urban contexts. This study explores three urban units—formal, transition and informal—of the capital of Cape Verde, in terms of overweight/obesity, cardiometabolic risk, physical activity and other aspects related to the urban environment.

Studies on attitudes and practices are increasingly used but not specifically related to the motivations for the use of reproductive health care among women of fertile age, living in urban areas and in different social contexts.

Conditional dependence diagnostic in the latent class model: A simulation study

The classical latent class model assumes the hypothesis of conditional independence. We explore tools commonly used to validate this hypothesis (correlation residual plot, log-odds ratio check plot, and known goodness of fit tests) to make practitioners aware of these tools’ shortcomings in correctly identifying local dependence.
