Generation of an antibody that recognizes Plasmodium chabaudi cysteine protease (chabaupain-1) in both sexual and asexual parasite life cycle and evaluation of chabaupain-1 vaccine potential

  • Autores: Almeida AJ, Antunes S, Armada A, Custodio A, Domingos A, Gazarini M, Gonçalves LM, Rodrigues A, Rosário VE, Santos-Gomes G, Silveira H

Malaria cysteine proteases have been shown to be immunogenic and are being exploited as serodiagnostic markers, drug and vaccine targets. Several Plasmodium spp. cysteine proteases have been described and the best characterized of these are the falcipains, a family of papain-family enzymes. Falcipain-2 and falcipain-3 act in concert with other proteases to hydrolyze host erythrocyte hemoglobin in the parasite food vacuole.

Teamwork in primary care: Perspectives of general practitioners and community nurses in Lithuania

  • Autores: Jaruseviciene L, Jarusevicius G, Kontrimiene A, Lapão LV, Liseckiene I, Valius L
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: BMC Family Practice
  • Link: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2296/14/118

A team approach in primary care has proven benefits in achieving better outcomes, reducing health care costs, satisfying patient needs, ensuring continuity of care, increasing job satisfaction among health providers and using human health care resources more efficiently. However, some research indicates constraints in collaboration within primary health care (PHC) teams in Lithuania. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon of teamwork in Lithuania by exploring the experiences of teamwork by general practitioners (GPs) and community nurses (CNs) involved in PHC.

This study evaluates the impact of specific HIV-1 protease-compensatory mutations (wild-type amino acids in non-B subtypes) on virological response to a first-line lopinavir/ritonavir-containing regimen in an HIV-1 subtype B-infected population.

The first detection of Leishmania major in naturally infected Sergentomyia minuta in Portugal

  • Autores: Afonso MO, Campino L, Cortes S, Dionísio L, Maia C, Neto L
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23828004

Phlebotomine sandflies of the genus Sergentomyia are widely distributed throughout the Old World. It has been suggested that Sergentomyia spp are involved in the transmission of Leishmania in India and Africa, whereas Phlebotomus spp are thought to be the sole vectors of Leishmania in the Old World. In this study, Leishmania major DNA was detected in one Sergentomyia minuta specimen that was collected in the southern region of Portugal. This study challenges the dogma that Leishmania is exclusively transmitted by species of the genus Phlebotomus in the Old World.

Maternal healthcare in migrants: a systematic review

  • Autores: Almeida ML, Ayres-de-Campos D, Caldas J, Dias S, Salcedo-Barrientos D
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Maternal and Child Health Journal
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23334357

Pregnancy is a period of increased vulnerability for migrant women, and access to healthcare, use and quality of care provided during this period are important aspects to characterize the support provided to this population. A systematic review of the scientific literature contained in the MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases was carried out, searching for population based studies published between 1990 and 2012 and reporting on maternal healthcare in immigrant populations.

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus and syphilis among indi- viduals attending anonymous testing for HIV in Luanda, Angola

  • Autores: Castro R, Guimarães NH, Lopes A, Pereira F
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: South African Medical Journal

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis remain major infections around the world. In Angola there are about 166 000 individuals living with HIV, representing a prevalence of 1.98% in adults between 15 and 49 years of age. In a 2003 study in Luanda, 4.5% of pregnant women had antibodies to HIV and 8.1% to HBV, and 5.4% were infected with Treponema pallidum.
