High GUD incidence in the early 20 century created a particularly permissive time window for the origin and initial spread of epidemic HIV strains

  • Autores: de Sousa JD, Lemey P, Müller V, Vandamme AM
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010
  • Journal: PLoS One
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=High+GUD+Incidence+in+the+Early+20(th)+Century+Created+a+Particularly+Permissive+Time+Window+for+the+Origin+and+Initial+Spread+of+Epidemic+HIV+Strains

The processes that permitted a few SIV strains to emerge epidemically as HIV groups remain elusive. Paradigmatic theories propose factors that may have facilitated adaptation to the human host (e.g., unsafe injections), none of which provide a coherent explanation for the timing, geographical origin, and scarcity of epidemic HIV strains.

Thioridazine protects the mouse from a virulent infection by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium 74

  • Autores: Amaral L, Chaki S, Christensen JB, Dasgupta A, Dastidar SG, Hendricks O, Kristiansen JE, Mukherjee S
  • Ano de Publicação: 2010
  • Journal: International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Thioridazine+protects+the+mouse+from+a+virulent+infection+by+Salmonella+enterica+serovar+Typhimurium+74

When administered to mice at doses of 100microg/mouse and 200microg/mouse, thioridazine (TDZ) significantly protected animals from the lethality produced by a virulent strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and reduced the number of bacteria retrieved from the spleen, liver and heart blood.

The rare HIV-1 gp41 mutations 43T and 50V elevate enfuvirtide resistance levels of common enfuvirtide resistance mutations that did not impact susceptibility to sifuvirtide

  • Autores: Balzarini J, Covens K, De Wit S, Dekeersmaeker N, Kabeya K, Megens S, Van Laethem K, Vandamme AM

Mutations that are selected at low frequency and/or reside outside the enfuvirtide target region, amino acid 36-45 of gp41, might still be important determinants for drug resistance.

DEB025/Debio 025 (Alisporivir) is a cyclophilin (Cyp)-binding molecule with potent anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) activity both in vitro and in vivo. It is currently being evaluated in phase II clinical trials. DEB025 binds to CypA, a peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase which is a crucial cofactor for HCV replication.
