Approaches to passive mosquito surveillance in the EU

  • Autores: Bartumeus F, Chouin S, Kampen H, Koenraadt CJM, Medlock JM, Oltra A, Sousa CA, van Vliet AJH, Vaux AGC, Werner D
  • Ano de Publicação: 2015
  • Journal: Parasites & Vectors

The recent emergence in Europe of invasive mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease associated with both invasive and native mosquito species has prompted intensified mosquito vector research in most European countries. Central to the efforts are mosquito monitoring and surveillance activities in order to assess the current species occurrence, distribution and, when possible, abundance, in order to permit the early detection of invasive species and the spread of competent vectors.

Triosephosphate isomerase gene promoter variation:-5G/A and-8G/A polymorphisms in clinical malaria groups in two African populations

  • Autores: Arez AP, Fernandes N, Guerra M, Machado P, Manco L, Miranda J
  • Ano de Publicação: 2015
  • Journal: Infection Genetics and Evolution
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25801609

TPI1 promoter polymorphisms occur in high prevalence in individuals from African origin. Malaria-patients from Angola and Mozambique were screened for the TPI1 gene promoter variants rs1800200A>G, (-5G>A), rs1800201G>A, (-8G>A), rs1800202T>G, (-24T>G), and for the intron 5 polymorphism rs2071069G>A, (2262G>A). -5G>A and -8G>A variants occur in 47% and 53% in Angola and Mozambique, respectively while -24T>G was monomorphic for the wild-type T allele.

Direct detection of Theileria annulata in bovine blood samples using standard and isothermal DNA amplification approaches

  • Autores: Gomes J, Inacio J
  • Ano de Publicação: 2015
  • Journal: Methods in molecular biology
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25399096

Tropical theileriosis is a tick-borne disease responsible for important health problems in cattle, caused by the hemoprotozoan Theileria annulata. Traditionally, detection of Theileria pathogens in infected animals requires the microscopic examination of stained-blood smears and serological methods.

N-Cinnamoylation of Antimalarial Classics: Effects of Using Acyl Groups Other than Cinnamoyl toward Dual-Stage Antimalarials

  • Autores: Gomes A, Gomes P, Lobo L, Machado M, Nogueira F, Prudencio M, Teixeira C
  • Ano de Publicação: 2015
  • Journal: Chemmedchem
  • Link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26038181

In a follow-up study to our reports of N-cinnamoylated chloroquine and quinacrine analogues as promising dual-stage antimalarial leads with high in vitro potency against both blood-stage Plasmodium falciparum and liver-stage Plasmodium berghei, we decided to investigate the effect of replacing the cinnamoyl moiety with other acyl groups.
