The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocide and antimicrobial susceptibility of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal isolates from horses. Fourteen methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) were subjected to an extensive genotype characterization, including SCCmec, dru, spa, PFGE and MLST typing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed and resistance genes were detected by PCR. Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of four biocides [chlorhexidine acetate (CHA), benzalkonium chloride (BAC), triclosan (TCL) and glutaraldehyde (GLA)] were determined following the recommendations of document NF EN 1040.

New Insights into the Population Structure of Anopheles gambiae s.s. in the Gulf of Guinea Islands Revealed by Herves Transposable Elements

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile portions of DNA that are able to replicate and spread in the genome of many organisms. TEs can be used as a means to insert transgenes in insects, being stably inherited throughout generations.

Brazil-Africa technical cooperation in health: What’s its relevance to the post-Busan debate on ‘aid effectiveness’?

  • Autores: Cabral L, Ferrinho P, Russo G
  • Ano de Publicação: 2013
  • Journal: Globalization and Health
  • Link: http://www.globalizationandhealth.com/content/9/1/2

Brazil is rapidly becoming an influential player in development cooperation, also thanks to its high-visibility health projects in Africa and Latin America. The 4th High-level Forum on Aid Effectiveness held in Busan in late 2011 marked a change in the way development cooperation is conceptualised. The present paper explores the issue of emerging donors’ contribution to the post-Busan debate on aid effectiveness by looking at Brazil’s health cooperation projects in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Immunoproteomic analysis of Plasmodium falciparum antigens using sera from patients with clinical history of imported malaria

Background The malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum remains a serious public health problem in the world, due largely to the absence of an effective vaccine. There is a lack of information on the structural properties and antigens capable of activating the immunological mechanisms for the induction of protective immunity. Therefore, the objective of this study […]

Role of the mmr ef- flux pump in drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Efflux pumps are membrane proteins capable of actively transporting a broad range of substrates from the cytoplasm to the exterior of the cell. Increased efflux activity in response to drug treatment may be the first step in the development of bacterial drug resistance.

Enhanced Detection of Tuberculous Mycobacteria in Animal Tissues Using a Semi-Nested Probe-Based Real-Time PCR

Bovine tuberculosis has been tackled for decades by costly eradication programs in most developed countries, involving the laboratory testing of tissue samples from allegedly infected animals for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) members, namely Mycobacterium bovis. Definitive diagnosis is usually achieved by bacteriological culture, which may take up to 6–12 weeks, during which the suspect animal carcass and herd are under sanitary arrest.

Evolution of the human immunodeficiency virus type 2 envelope in the first years of infection is associated with the dynamics of the neutralizing antibody response

Differently from HIV-1, HIV-2 disease progression usually takes decades without antiretroviral therapy and the majority of HIV-2 infected individuals survive as elite controllers with normal CD4+ T cell counts and low or undetectable plasma viral load. Neutralizing antibodies (Nabs) are thought to play a central role in HIV-2 evolution and pathogenesis. However, the dynamic of the Nab response and resulting HIV-2 escape during acute infection and their impact in HIV-2 evolution and disease progression remain largely unknown. Our objective was to characterize the Nab response and the molecular and phenotypic evolution of HIV-2 in association with Nab escape in the first years of infection in two children infected at birth.

Synthesis, structural characterization and leishmanicidal activity evaluation of ferrocenyl N-heterocyclic compounds

New ferrocenyl derivatives with the general formula FcC(O)L [Fc = (η5-C5H5)Fe(η5-C5H4)], where L is an aminoquinoline or hydroxyaminoquinoline, have been synthesized for evaluation of their leishmanicidal properties. The compounds were designed with ferrocene coupled to the quinolines by an amide or ester bridge. Ferrocenyl component is intended to act as quinoline carrier and ROS producer after in vivo oxidation to Fe(III), while decreasing normal cell cytotoxicity of coupled quinolines. The bridge was chosen based on its known ability to undergo hydrolysis by the protease/esterase rich media in phagolysosomes, the target of the intracellular form of leishmania parasites.

Programmes and calls for public health research in European countries

Public health research, at population and organizational level, needs to be identified independently within ‘health’ research from biomedicine and life sciences. In PHIRE (Public Health Innovation and Research in Europe), we investigated the extent and character of public health research calls and programmes in European countries.
